Michael Sloneker and Cullen Casey obtained a defense verdict in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County following a 6 day jury trial. The plaintiff alleged that the defendant surgeon was negligent in clipping and cutting both the common hepatic duct and the common bile duct during a laparoscopic cholecystectomy procedure in October 2011. The plaintiff also alleged that she required four additional procedures, including a Roux-en-Y hepatico-juenjunostomy (biliary reconstructive surgery) at Georgetown University Medical Center, which left her with a large midline abdominal scar. She also claimed approximately $200,000 in medical expenses resulting from the alleged negligence.
The defense called experts in surgery and hepatico-biliary surgery who testified that the plaintiff had abnormal biliary anatomy that led to the misidentification of bile ducts and the injury.
The jury deliberated for approximately 2 hours before returning the defense verdict.
